John Whalen traveled up to Winsted, CT yesterday to visit Winchester Woodworks. They invited us to their “open house” to see some of the projects currently in their shop. (I was unable to attend because Annmarie is due to give birth to our third child any minute.)
One project in the shop is a custom kitchen we designed for a client here in Chappaqua. It’s scheduled to be installed in a few weeks, so it was nice for John to get a preview of the finished work. He’s the project’s manager and has spent countless hours making sure all the details have been addressed and meet the Fivecat standard.
John came home very happy.
Not only do the cabinets look great, but he was impressed in how passionate the craftsman at Winchester are about what they do. As is always the case when a passionate designer meets with a passionate craftsman, the occasion turned into a progress meeting. They started discussing the intricate details still required for completion of this modern bamboo kitchen. How does the glass guillotine panel at the pass-through work? How is the edge detail of the Plyboo exposed? How will the frameless glass doors look when open? Closed?
Passion. Pride. These are the ingredients for every successful project. When you work with people who love what they do and deeply care about how every detail is addressed, it is truly a pleasure. It’s simply how great projects are created.

Well first things first! A third child due any minute? How wonderful! I wish you and your family many years of making beautiful family memories. I had the privilege of being with our third child (and his absolutely lovely girlfriend) yesterday when he had a bike race in New Jersey. He came in 10 out of 100! Families first, no question!
Second, that kitchen looks like one impressive set of cabinetry, or vice versa, whatever. But, it looks fantastic. You must show the finished kitchen.
Thank you Susan. Stay tuned. I will post pictures… of both the kitchen and the baby!
