James C. Rose

Mom sent me this link to the James Rose Center for Landscape Architecture Research and Design.

James C. Rose was a leader of the modern movement in American landscape design. In 1953 he designed and built a house and garden in suburban Ridgewood, NJ, which was published in Progressive Architecture magazine and applauded for its integration of architecture and landscape design.

From the James Rose Center website:

For its unique modern spatial language, its expression of an alternative approach to conventional post-war suburban residential development and as the constantly changing laboratory of one of landscape architecture’s most inventive minds, the Ridgewood home of James Rose is one of the twentieth century’s most important landscapes.

During the 1980’s, the property fell into disrepair and was damaged by fire. I remember seeing it very overgrown and abandoned when I was in high school (Ridgewood was our football rival). Being interested in architecture, the building intrigued me, but I never knew its significance until years later when I read about Rose in architecture school.

During the 90’s, the property was restored and is now open to the general public daily from May 15 through September 1.

Thanks Mom…love you.
