When I posted about Yonkers Redevelopment, this was not what I was talking about.
I’m hoping this is a joke, but I don’t think it is.
Deidre Woollard over at the Luxist blog reports that British architect Will Alsop unveiled plans to dismantle the historic smoke stacks of the Yonkers power station and convert the building into an avant-garde luxury condo complex, complete with a museum, restaurant and riverfront park. Apparently the zoning process scheduled for this May.
If you hurry, you’ll catch Thomas Rinaldi and Robert Yasinsac’s photography exhibit, Yonkers Power Station: Monumental Ruin on the Hudson at the Beczak Environmental Education Center. It’s on display until April 19th.
Thomas and Robert run a website called Hudson Valley Ruins, where they post Demolition Alerts for endangered Hudson Valley landmarks, including the Yonkers Power Station posted in 2005.

I am not against redeveloping abandoned and obsolete buildings, but the adapted reuse should be respectful of the original architecture. Alsop’s design for the power station has no such respect.
Let’s hope the Yonkers Zoning Board votes to preserve the integrity of this historic landmark.
